‘Shining a light on radiography’
Hello and welcome to the 2024 edition of our Starting out guide for new professionals!
Congratulations, you have completed chapter one of your radiography journey, and we at the SoR are delighted to be supporting you as you start writing your next chapter.
This year’s edition is filled with amazing stories from radiographers at very different stages of very different journeys, and I truly hope that you find hope and inspiration within these pages.
Divia and Ben are brilliant examples of early leadership, and their transparent reflections on the first year post graduation are nothing short of heartening and empowering. This leads us to think about what our careers might look like in the future, as we grow in confidence and experience within the profession. And who better to shine a light on the ever-growing possibilities in radiography than Louise, Ian and Conor, who share their insights into the exciting area of forensic and postmortem imaging, and new advanced roles such as clinical academia and the consultant radiographer.
Of course, along the way, we have included all of the fundamentals on payslips, pensions and health and safety, as well as employability and CPD guidance to support you in taking those next steps in lifelong learning and getting the best possible start in your career.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a new professional resource without a focus on the most important aspect of all – you. Here we include our advice on wellbeing, as well as identifying and navigating unacceptable behaviours in the workplace. Remember – always reach out if you need support.
The most beautiful thing about radiography for me, and the reason I came to work in my role, is that feeling of belonging. Belonging to something bigger, something important, something good. We often hear about radiography being like a big family, and that has been so true for me since my very first days as a student. Remember this. Remember this when you use your voice with others, and remember it when you speak to yourself.
Within these pages you will find warmth and inspiration alongside formal guidance, but never forget that support exists in many forms within your membership and, if you ever need advice, please don’t hesitate to drop me an email.
We at the SoR are privileged to walk alongside you as you move into our valuable workforce, and wish you the best of luck and warmest wishes on your new adventure!
Best wishes,
Nichola
