Members of the SoR have elected new representatives for the Wales and Northern regions of the UK Council.

Amanda Evans was named as the winning representative for Wales. Amanda is a Diagnostic Radiographer and leads the National Imaging Portfolio Programme within the National Imaging Programme. She was elected alongside existing Wales representative Clive McCallum-Roberts.

Nnaemeka Ugwu, an MRI clinical lead radiographer, won the election for the Northern region representative role. He ran unopposed.

In her election statement, Amanda thanked SoR members in Wales for allowing her to represent Wales on the UK Council. “I believe that this is an opportune time for me to stand again as Wales representative as within my current role I am in a unique position, having constant communications with all radiology across Wales,” she said. “This is via a variety of channels and meetings and consequently I am acutely aware of the pressures we face within the NHS in Wales.”

Nnaemeka said that, as a Northern council representative, he would “represent the interests of all my colleagues within the region at the council level”.

British Journal of Radiology names new medical editor-in-chief

The British Journal of Radiology (BJR) has named Professor Stuart Taylor as its new medical editor-in-chief.

Stuart is a professor of medical imaging at the Centre for Medical Imaging, University College London, and a senior investigator at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). He is also the chair of the NIHR Imaging Group.

“Medical publishing is rapidly evolving with new challenges but many opportunities,” said Stuart. “BJR is the oldest radiological journal in the world and I am very much looking forward to carrying on the excellent work of my predecessor, Dr Simon Jackson, in keeping the journal at the cutting edge of imaging science.”

Dr Simon Jackson, outgoing editor-in-chief of the BJR, said: “It has been an honour serving as BJR editor in chief (medical) during the past eight years. I offer my heartfelt thanks to the BJR editorial board and editorial office team for helping to steer the journal on an upward trajectory.”

Nominations open for Rep of the Year

Nominations have opened for Rep of the Year, the winners of which will be celebrated at the Annual Delegates Conference on 28-30 April.

Members who wish to nominate an eligible SoR rep should submit their nominations here before the 14 February deadline.

Rep of the Year was created to recognise accredited SoR health and safety, industrial relations or union learning representatives who have made an outstanding contribution to the profession.

“The network of SoR members that have been elected and accredited as representatives of the union is a tremendous benefit for all of our members,” said Richard Evans, CEO of the SoR. “Our reps make the SoR present in the majority of workplaces across the UK and of course are there to ensure that our members have advice, support and a voice at work.

“I hope that the selfless and dedicated work of SoR reps will be recognised once again in this year’s Rep of the Year award. Please consider nominating your colleagues who do this valuable work.”

Free RadResearch conference open to SoR members

SoR members are encouraged to attend a radiography research conference taking place in Leeds on 12 March, which is free for all to attend.

The conference is organised by RadResearch, an incubator for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiographers. It is supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and will take place at Cloth Hall Court, Leeds.

A conference spokesperson said RadResearch was “seeking participants who can demonstrate a keen interest in clinical research and the potential to develop a clinical academic career in the medium to long term”.

“Throughout the day, we will focus on building your confidence in research skills, providing essential information on furthering your participation in research and offering advice on developing a clinical academic career,” the spokesperson said.

Attendees will also hear from Professor Helen McNair and Dr Tim Donovan, alongside details on Dr Ruth Reeve’s career journey to becoming a clinical academic.
