Coming soon from the SoR

Part of the New Professionals’ Series

Unblurring the Lines of Professionalism

Virtual event
Monday 12 June, 19:00-20:00

We are expected to uphold excellent standards of performance, conduct and ethics, however, sometimes the concept of “professionalism” can feel difficult to define for our newly qualified workforce.

This session will outline the parameters of professional behaviours in the workplace and provide a comprehensive breakdown of current HCPC/SoR guidance, including advice from SoR officers on how to deal with real-life scenarios. As always, we will include plenty of time for your questions and we’ll signpost additional support at the end of the session.

Webinar Series

Radiation Protection Webinar Series

The three basic principles of radiation protection are justification, optimisation, and dose limitation. Join us for this series of webinars where we’ll highlight each of these principles in turn, starting with optimisation.

Diagnostic Reference Levels and Dose Reference Levels: what are they and how should I use them?

Virtual event
Wednesday 15 November, 19:00-20:00

Learn how National and Local Diagnostic and Dose Reference Levels (DRLs) are developed, and how using DRLs effectively will ensure you are working safely and proactively.

Optimisation, the Art of Radiography

Virtual event
 Wednesday 6 December, 19:00-20:00

Building on the use of DRLs, we will begin exploring the opportunities to optimise exposures both at a protocol and individual patient level. We’ll consider the requirements of IR(ME)R and what that means for everyday practice, including working with medical physics colleagues and those reporting our images.

Further webinars in this series will follow in 2024.

Forensic committee launches for UK radiographers

The International Association of Forensic Radiographers (IAFR) has been leading and promoting best practice in forensic radiography since 2005, and the UK IAFR Branch has been set up to focus on the needs of UK forensic radiographers.

Chaired by consultant radiographer Dr Claire Robinson (pictured), the branch has been working with the SoR to provide direction in updating current national forensic radiography guidance, as well as hosting online webinars covering topics surrounding post-mortem CT, paediatric imaging and interprofessional perspectives including being an expert witness and how the police investigate child death

The committee is now planning a full timetable of webinars and their first in-person event since Covid-19. The webinars are open to all radiographers, and you can register your interest online. Similarly, if you have an interest in forensic radiography, have a question relating to this field or would like some advice, don’t hesitate to contact the committee at uk@iafr.org.uk.

New MRI Planning for Radiotherapy special interest group

This new special interest group is aimed at both diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers who work in MRI scanners, scanning patients for the purpose of radiotherapy planning.

The aims of the group are to promote best practice, develop a collaborative approach, develop a community of radiographers working in MRI radiotherapy planning and to provide peer support.

The objectives are to:

• Establish an active SIG
• Share research and expertise
• Develop potential research collaborations
• Create CPD opportunities
• Encourage personal development

In the first instance, the group will meet twice a year via MS Teams. Radiographers interested in joining the group can email their details to ggc.mribeatson@ggc.scot.nhs.uk and will be added to the Teams channel.
