Radiographer takes on 40 charity events before turning 40
Alexandra Cook, radiographer at Siemens Healthineers, is taking on the 40 under 40 challenge to raise money for breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Her next big events are a 100km run along the Thames path and trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Alexandra’s late uncle was diagnosed with prostate cancer during the pandemic and together they decided that, before she turned 40 years old, she would take on the challenge to raise awareness of charities that have supported her friends and family.
“I started this journey with the Kew Half Marathon in April 2023 and sadly after the race I found out my uncle had died – so I have to complete it,” she says.
Alexandra has so far completed 16 out of 40 events (at the time of writing), with 18 months remaining, and raised £7,000.
Obituary: Abrar Hussain-Qureshi
Radiographer Abrar Hussain-Qureshi has passed away at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, after falling ill in December 2023 and will be missed by those who knew him.
Abrar was a husband, father, brother, colleague, friend and soldier. He was born in Pakistan on 20 November 1961.
In the 1960s, Abrar and his sister moved to Bradford, West Yorkshire, where Abrar later began his career in radiography.
Abrar graduated from the Bradford School of Radiography in 1984 and took up his first post at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. It was there at the nurse’s home he met his wife, Tracey.
In 1990, Abrar joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served as a soldier and radiographer at three military hospitals in England.
During this time, Abrar and Tracey shared with friends their love of curry and his passion for radiography, as well as his beloved Pakistan cricket team.
After leaving the army in 1993, Abrar worked at the Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon, before realising his dream to work abroad at the Jersey General Hospital, Jersey. There, he and Tracey played wonderful host to family and friends alike.
Abrar, Tracey and their daughter, Yasmin, later moved to live in Cheshire, where Abrar initially worked at Stepping Hill Hospital and private hospitals. His last career move was to the University Dental Hospital of Manchester.
Stephen Wolstenhulme, a retired radiographer and colleague of Abrar’s, said: “Throughout his radiography career, colleagues, and patients, benefited from his care for others. Abrar was a sociable chap, enjoying life with family and friends: gardening, travelling to new places, playing and watching cricket and relaxing.
"Abrar was thankful for the life he shared with his family and friends. He will be missed, and remembered, by those who were fortunate enough to have lived life with him.”
