Achieving Excellence in Radiography Education and Research 2024

20-21 November | ibis Birmingham New Street Station | Event sold out, contact conferences@sor.org to be added to waiting list

Do you want to improve the student experience and the training of the future radiographic workforce?

If you work in radiography education, in the practice setting or in a higher education institution, this two-day conference is for you.

You will hear from experts who will dissect the current issues in radiography education and you’ll leave feeling empowered to improve the student experience, full of ideas to implement in your own practice.

There will be opportunities to present about your own research in radiography education, ask questions, share experiences and contribute to the discussion.

Networking with other radiography educators and meeting face to face is always a highlight of the event. Join us to connect, develop new contacts and collaborations and move forward!

Justification and authorisation of exposures in diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy – whose role is it anyway?

Tuesday 12 November, 7-8pm

Help protect the interests of your patients by equipping yourself to effectively justify exposures and facilitate smooth patient pathways through diagnostic imaging.

We’ll explain the terms ‘operator’ and ‘practitioner’ as applied to IR(ME)R regulations, as well as the requirements of these roles. You will learn the difference between justification and authorisation under guidelines issued by the practitioner, and understand how to decide if radiographers need to be entitled as IR(ME)R practitioners and when it is helpful to do so – as well as the governance and training required for radiographers to carry out this role.

We will also cover how to escalate complex referrals where justification may be multifactorial, and how to manage them when the exposure is not justified.

You’ll leave with confidence to work appropriately within your scope of practice and present yourself as a radiation expert. You’ll also be able to reassure patients that your imaging exposures are as safe and effective as they can be.

This webinar is part of the Radiation Protection Series.

The three basic principles of radiation protection are justification, optimisation and dose limitation.

In this series, we’ve been highlighting each of these principles in turn. Join us live for the third session on 12 November and catch up on anything you missed by watching recordings of previous webinars on our website.

We break down the knowledge, practical experience and processes required for diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers undertaking diagnostic imaging to ensure exposures are appropriately optimised. You will leave feeling empowered to work safely, progress your practice into radiation governance and support other operators and learners to develop their radiation protection skills.

Reminder of recorded sessions:

Diagnostic Reference Levels and Dose Reference Levels: what are they and how should I use them?

Learn how National and Local Diagnostic and Dose Reference Levels (DRLs) are developed, and how using DRLs effectively will ensure you are working safely and proactively.

Optimisation, the Art of Radiography

Building on the use of DRLs, we begin exploring the opportunities to optimise exposures both at a protocol and individual patient level. We consider the requirements of IR(ME)R and what that means for everyday practice, including working with medical physics colleagues and those reporting our images.
