Therapeutic Radiographer James Barber was shortlisted for the Chief Allied Health Professions Officer Award for Leadership in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
The award acknowledges and celebrates allied healthcare professionals who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of equality, diversity and inclusion.
James works at the Royal Free London, and is chair of the SoR’s Equalise LGBTQI+ Workers Group.
His nomination described James as “the most hardworking, passionate and driven Therapeutic Radiographer who constantly strives for better in practice and for our patients”.
James said: “I am extremely grateful to be shortlisted for the CAHPO Leadership in EDI Award. In the time since I became chair of the SoR LGBTQI+ Equalise Workers Group, it feels like now more than ever it is vital to champion the importance of working to ensure that all healthcare professionals truly embody the principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity rather than just going through the motions.”

A group of radiographers who began their training at Leeds General Infirmary 50 years ago celebrated the milestone last month by reuniting at the very same hospital.
Part of a group of 15 who began studying at what was then the School of Radiography in October 1975, the 11 gathered to share their experiences.
Many have remained in the profession for the entirety of their working lives, and were keen to encourage others to consider radiography as a career. Seven of the trainees were employed at Leeds General Infirmary straight after qualifying.
Carol Richardson, June Harding and Michelle Crowe all went on to qualify as sonographers.
Carol, who worked in hospitals in Brighton and Eastbourne, said: “The training is so good for a young person; you have to learn how to deal with patients and it gives you a good grounding for your future. I loved ultrasound, and my youngest daughter also went into radiography, so I must have set a good example.”

Two radiography researchers have been appointed to the SoR Radiography journal and European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS) editorial fellowships for 2025 to 2027.
Dr Mairead Daly, a postdoctoral research associate in the division of cancer sciences at the University of Manchester, has received the SoR Radiography journal fellowship, while Dr Karen Brage, associate lecturer and researcher at UCL University College, Denmark, was awarded the EFRS fellowship.
The two will now gain experience in these developmental roles, which aim to provide training in editorial skills, including manuscript evaluation, the peer review process, manuscript production and publication, and journal outreach.
During the fellowship period, Dr Daly and Dr Brage will be required to lead on a project linked to the journal’s strategy, will become members of the International Advisory Board of Radiography and will be invited to join Editorial Board meetings as observers.

The Society of Radiographers has welcomed the announcement that the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) has appointed its latest chief executive.
Claire Angus took on the role on 1 September, succeeding Sara Purdy – who had held the position for the past three years.
Joining the BIR from the Royal College of Podiatry, Claire brings with her experience as director of membership and events, where she led strategic planning, member engagement and the delivery of scientific events.
Richard Evans, CEO of the SoR, said: “The British Institute of Radiology is a long-standing partner of the SoR. In fact, the SoR office was initially hosted by the BIR after our foundation in 1920. The multidisciplinary membership of the BIR gives it a unique value at the heart of diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy, and it is great to welcome Claire Angus as the new CEO. I look forward to meeting Claire soon and to working together in future.”
