Former society president turns 100

Gwendoline McCullough, president of the SoR for the year 1976-77, last month turned 100, bringing well wishes and warm memories from those who knew and worked with her.

On 14 July, 1976, Gwendoline was unanimously elected to the office of the President, where she was greeted with “congratulations and good wishes” for her presidential year by the members of the Society.

Her election coincided with the 21st anniversary of the Northern Ireland Branch, of which Gwendoline was a founding member. Her presidency was also “particularly remarkable” as it saw the agreement by members to register the SoR as a trade union and the formation of the College of Radiographers as a subsidiary company.

Gwendoline began her radiographic training in 1947 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast – prior to which she had been a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, the Wrens, serving both in England and Australia as a radio mechanic.

Adele Lyons retires from Varian after 25 years

Long-standing SoR member Adele Lyons has announced her retirement from Varian Medical Systems after more than 25 years with the company.

Adele, a former therapeutic radiographer and now Great Britain & Ireland zone head for Varian, is retiring in December after a varied career in radiography.

Having provided vital expertise in creating cutting-edge radiotherapy equipment and supported radiographers across the country in its use with Varian, Adele has also been a member of the SoR for the entirety of her career.

She started her career as a radiographer after her father met the head of the school of radiography at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle on a train.

On her retirement, Adele admitted she is nervous to be leaving the workplace but has plans to take a holiday before spending more time with family, catching up with friends, travel, and enjoying her hobbies. She also intends to continue supporting the work of charity Radiotherapy UK.
