World Radiography Day is an important date in the diary for those working in imaging and oncology. On 8 November each year, the global radiography community comes together in celebrating the profession and marking the historic day that German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen made a discovery that changed healthcare forever.
The Society of Radiographers aims to help its members celebrate World Radiography Day, sponsored by Elekta, and to promote the profession to the wider world. Below, Synergy shares some of your celebrations.
This year, the society is acknowledging the skill and dedication of radiography professionals as well as calling attention to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
To mark the day, the SoR offered World Radiography Day packs for members that were available on request. The lite packs contain posters, colouring sheets, bunting and stickers. Members could also download resources from the SoR website.
Ahead of the day, Richard Evans, CEO of the SoR, and Katie Thompson, president of the society, visited On Air Media Group’s studios in Fitzrovia, London, to hold a series of media interviews promoting radiography.

‘Healthcare demand is high’
Katie and Richard emphasised the benefits and importance of radiographers’ roles in tackling the high waiting lists, which the NHS is struggling with daily. “We know that healthcare demand is high. The number of people who need to be trained for radiography is also high – a lot has been done to improve the number of routes into radiography,” said Richard.
“The other factor is hard economics. Not enough money has been put into training radiographers. At the moment, a lot of hospitals are cash-strapped. Vacancies are not being filled as quickly as they need to be. All of these things are contributing to the shortage.”
Richard and Katie were also asked about the growing role of AI in radiography, and whether it could eventually replace radiographers. “AI is already being used to support radiographers in their roles, but it is a collaborative technology that will always need human input,” Katie explained. “The role of the radiographer may change over time, but it cannot be replaced with AI.”
This year also marks the SoR’s relaunch of its ‘Hello, my name is…’ campaign, reaffirming the importance of empathy and connection in every patient interaction. “We want to raise the profession of radiographers by telling patients who we are and what we’re doing,” Richard explained. “We also want to show the patients we’re giving them time when they come for their examinations.
“It’s really important when someone comes into the department that they know who you are and what you’re doing. It can really relieve anxiety for patients if they know that you’re giving them time and attention to explain what’s happening.”

“Our promotional display highlighted the history of X-rays, featuring engaging information, photographs of some of our staff performing dental and general radiography, and recognition of our dedicated radiology support staff who keep the department running smoothly through efficient workflows, clinic support and patient care.
“To make the day fun for everyone, we provided colouring posters and crayons for both children and adults. These were enjoyed by patients while waiting for appointments – and many took them home to share a creative moment with their children or grandchildren.
“As the only dental hospital in Birmingham, we take pride in promoting and raising awareness of dental radiography throughout the year. We are also passionate about teaching radiography students during their placements, offering them valuable hands-on experience in dental X-rays – a skill that is no longer routinely covered in university radiography programmes.

More about World Radiography Day
World Radiography Day, sponsored by Elekta (WRD) is celebrated on 8 November each year. The date marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-radiation by Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895.
Radiography professionals worldwide can use the occasion to promote radiography as a career and as a vital contribution to modern healthcare, as well using it to increase public awareness of diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy.
WRD 2025 activities are generously sponsored by Elekta.
