College of Radiographers: What we do

Marcus Jackson, chair of the CoR Board of Trustees, outlines the work and aims of the College

I am delighted to welcome all to this inaugural column which is dedicated to the work of the College of Radiographers Board of Trustees (CBoT).

The aim of the column is to share the work of the College of Radiographers (CoR) and in this first column I will outline its relationship with the Society of Radiographers, introduce the objectives of the College, and the role of CBoT and my fellow trustees.

The Society and the College share common goals and work collectively, but also have some differences in their role and remit.

Roles of the Society

The Society of Radiographers, founded in 1920, is the trade union and professional body for radiographers in the UK.

The SoR shapes policies and standards, pioneers new ways of working, and ensures safe and fair workplaces.

Governance of the SoR is provided by the UK Council which is responsible for delegating work streams to CBoT to fulfil. Radiographers can become members of the SoR but not the CoR.

The College of Radiographers

The CoR is concerned with the promotion and development of medical imaging and radiotherapy, the promotion of study and research into radiography, and the promotion of public awareness of the profession.

In order to achieve this it focuses on three key objectives, which are seen to be directly in the public benefit:

  • To promote and develop for the public benefit the science and practice of radiography and radiotherapeutic technology and allied subjects.
  • To promote, study and research work in radiography and radiotherapeutic technology and allied subjects and to publish the results of all such study and research.
  • To further public education.

Every three years the College of Radiographers Board of Trustees agrees a strategy with further detailed objectives.

Details of the current College strategy can be found here. The new strategy (2024 -2027) is in the process of being finalised in conjunction with SoR.

Governing the College of Radiographers is the College Board of Trustees (CBoT).

CBoT consists of six external appointed trustees and up to six trustees nominated by the UK Council of the Society, along with the President and the Chair. Operational responsibility for both the Society and the College rests with the CEO, supported by the executive directors.

I would now like to introduce myself and my fellow Trustees.
