New national guidelines published on transgender care in breast services

The Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) has released new national guidelines related to the treatment and care of trans and gender diverse individuals in breast services.

Co-authored by OUTpatients, the UK’s LGBTIQ+ cancer charity, the guidance is designed to cover aspects of care provided by breast services – including genetic risk assessment, chemotherapy and cancer gene profiling.

In addition, pathways for gender-affirming chest surgery are detailed, including referral processes, surgical techniques and recommendations for surgeons.

The core principles of the guidance are centred around respect and dignity. This comprises using preferred names, pronouns and language, avoiding assumptions and asserting confidentiality in regards to sensitive personal data. The guidance aligns with the SoR’s inclusive practice values.

New resources from NHS England will see radiographers and other allied health professionals (AHPs) who have been recruited from abroad receive better quality preceptorship and foundation support.

To support AHPs, NHS England has launched the National AHP Preceptorship and Foundation Support Programme, and the International Recruitment Implementation Framework within it.

The resources help to make sure that international recruits are supported in their transition to NHS employment. They will also ensure that the quality of preceptorship programmes and foundation support is standardised across the country.

In addition, the International Recruitment Implementation Framework will provide personalised support for those recruited into the NHS from outside the UK. International recruits who join the NHS pass from pre-preceptorship to preceptorship and into foundation support.

There are a number of modules available – some addressing the AHP roles the programme covers, including diagnostic and therapeutic radiography.

Further information on the resources can be accessed here.

The Society of Radiographers has entered into a new personal injury agreement with Anthony Gold Solicitors.

Anthony Gold’s injury and medical claims team is award-winning, having received the Catastrophic Injury Team of the Year award and being shortlisted for other national personal injury awards.

The personal injury agreement will see SoR trade union members continue to receive 100 per cent compensation for any successful work-related injury claims.

Priorities in seeking this new arrangement included ensuring an overview of injury trends and a review of cases as they progressed through the system. After a longstanding arrangement with Howard Kennedy Solicitors, the new agreement with Anthony Gold enables these priorities to continue.

Dean Rogers, SoR executive director of industrial strategy, said: “Following a thorough selection process, we are confident that Anthony Gold Solicitors is the right partner to support our members in personal injury claims.

“They are arguably England and Wales’s leading personal injury specialists with proven expertise, an excellent track record and a strong commitment to client care, which align closely with the standards we at the SoR expect for our members.”

The workshop will be delivered by the UK’s Health Security Agency’s Medical Exposures Group.
