SoR members contribute to latest NICE guidance on osteoporosis risk assessment

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published its latest guidance on osteoporosis, supported by three members of the Society of Radiographers.
In the guidelines, published on 29 July, NICE sets out the best practice for healthcare workers when treating patients with osteoporosis.
The SoR contributed to the drafting of the document, with support from society members Lisa Field, Rosemary James and Jill Griffin.
Jeanette Carter, SoR professional officer for clinical imaging, said: “We at the society are really grateful for the support of Rosie, Lisa and Jill in helping to formulate a response to NICE; without them it wouldn’t be possible.
“Their expert insight is essential to ensure the voice of the radiographers is represented on such national guidance, particularly in an area that is so close to radiographers’, in particular DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) radiographers’, hearts.”

Racism in the NHS survey sees Society of Radiographers featured across national media

The Society of Radiographers has garnered attention from national news media following its report about a rise in racist incidents within hospitals.
Following the release of results from the SoR’s Racism in the Workplace survey on 3 August, media organisations including ITV, the Guardian, Sky News, the Independent and The Telegraph have reported on the findings.
The survey, which ran from January to February this year, collated personal experiences of racism from SoR members and received a total of 382 responses.
Dean Rogers, executive director of industrial strategy and member relations at the SoR, was interviewed on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on the topic on 4 August.
He said: “This has to stop. There has to be measurable improvements. Not just recognition of the problem, but there has to be action taken and support put in place to make sure that racism is not acceptable.”
The SoR published the results from the survey on 3 August, alongside stories from radiographers who had experienced racism in the workplace.

First diagnostic X-rays taken in space

A study has confirmed that X-rays taken in orbit are diagnostically useful for understanding the health of the crew during spaceflight.
The SpaceXray research study, published in the Radiological Society of North America’s Radiology journal on 14 July, shows that commercial X-ray technology improves on ultrasound scanning typically used during space travel.
During the Fram2 private spaceflight in August 2024, operated by SpaceX, a portable digital radiography system was used to take X-rays of humans and equipment. These images have now been evaluated by experts to determine their usefulness.
Sue Johnson, professional officer for clinical imaging at the SoR, said: “This is a fascinating piece of research and an important step forward in understanding how imaging could support future space travel.
“Radiographers have a long history of working at the forefront of innovation, helping to develop, evaluate and implement new technologies in ways that improve patient care and outcomes. This technology will be no different.”
10 key findings from report on regulation of AI in healthcare

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has identified 10 key conclusions from its report on regulation of AI in healthcare.
Following a call for evidence in late 2025, the SoR joined 760 healthcare professionals, providers, industry bodies, patients and the public in submitting their perspectives on safe and effective use of AI in healthcare.
Now, the MHRA has published Information on how AI is used in Health and the Current Regulatory Frameworks, collecting its findings to provide an evidence base on how AI is used in practice and its regulatory challenges.
Jeanette Carter, professional officer for clinical imaging and AI at the SoR, contributed to the organisation’s response to the commission, alongside Julie Rankin, professional officer for Scotland and radiation protection, Lynda Johnson, professional officer for clinical imaging, and Sue Johnson, professional officer for clinical imaging.
Answers were needed to questions around post-market surveillance, the SoR said, as well as AI responsibility, training and literacy of AI and the need for human oversight – as is required by the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations.

Members of the SoR are being sought for the 4Ps Champion programme to advocate for person-centred care within clinical imaging and radiotherapy services.
The programme brings together members of the radiography workforce to raise awareness of the refreshed Partnership between Patients, Practitioners and the Public within Imaging and Radiotherapy services: Guiding Principles (4Ps) document, which comes as a result of a year of collaboration between members of the College of Radiographers’ Patient Advisory Group, SoR members and SoR staff.
Alongside this programme comes the release of a webinar outlining the guidance, how it can be applied across clinical practice, education and research, and how it can support meaningful patient and public involvement, service development and quality improvement initiatives.
